Field Notes by Nicola Moss describes a range of small works typically produced in situ whilst continuing her investigation into the influences of nature and relationships with particular trees. These pages are developed through drawings, frottage, prints, eucalypt stains, acrylic glazes and paints. For the Pivot exhibition at Onespace Gallery in 2019, a range of these ‘notes’ have been collected in an artist book, Choose your forest, which spans a 10-year period (2009-2019) linked to studio residencies in Tokyo, Sweden and Australia.
These works on paper are a kind of double-dimensional object where both sides of the page are used as surfaces for exploration in response to place. While Moss’ body of work, Choose your forest is a major archive of relationships, memories and emotional value from the trees she “has met”, the ability to acquire a singular piece creates another level of intimacy between audience, artist and the artwork narrative. The story of an individual tree is now taken into new environments, responding to its new place and a shared story.
