The Jane Street Community Food Garden is a signature greenspace in West End. For years I have walked past the raised beds, compost bins and Moreton Bay Figs on the way to the weekend markets. On my most recent walk the gardens looked the best I’ve seen them, full of life in a cacophony of edible foliage. The greenspace of community gardens are much more though – they encourage meeting and sharing. Open access is part philosophy and practicality, in a sense community gardens exist only if community supports them, turns up and volunteers. I couldn’t image living somewhere that I couldn’t access a place to put my hands into soil, to have embodied experiences of the cycle of life.

Eat your greens is a phrase perhaps best remembered from childhood, and of course an adage for lifelong health.
