I spent a month in Tokyo in September 2018, exploring the densely populated city’s green space. Walking around the inner city neighbourhoods of postcode 4101 Brisbane on return, I was struck by how green the area looked in comparison. Green Commons is a work that speaks about the idea of participation. Much of 4101’s green space is a mix of public and private, where street trees, nature strips, planted medians, green walls and gardens combine in borrowed landscapes. From 4101’s many hills, I looked across rooftops to see a patchwork of green – the green commons.
